A BRIEF OVERVIEW OF
F&N DAIRIES (M) SDN BHD

Almost every Malaysian has had a taste of F&N while growing up. Be it the sweetened condensed milk, evaporated milk, pasteurised milk, UHT milk, juice or ice cream. Recently, we added in yogurt and yogurt drinks. And as Malaysia grew, so did the company now known as F&N Dairies (Malaysia) Sdn Bhd.

F&N's dairy business grew out of a joint venture with Beatrice Foods of Chicago, USA in 1959 with the construction of Southeast Asia’s first sweetened condensed milk plant in Petaling Jaya, Malaysia. The Carnation Company, also from the US, joined the partnership in 1965 to form Premier Milk as the manufacturing arm. This partnership proved enterprising as within that year, the highly successful Evaporated Milk was launched.

Not a company to rest on their laurels, the Group constantly seeks product innovation and invention, which resulted in more products added to its admirable business portfolio.

In a strategic move in the market arena, the Group embarked on its first step toward a successful journey into the ice cream business.

In 1989, the Group acquired the interests of Beatrice Foods and restructured its dairy operations under F&N Dairies (Malaysia) Sdn Bhd. It was expanded further with the acquisition of Magnolia in 1995.

In 1998, the Group commenced its pasteurised business.

In 2008, F&N Dairies launched aLIVE, its new lifestyle F&B brand consisting of yoghurt, snack bars and cereal.

F&N Dairies Malaysia continued to gain momentum for the financial year ending September 2008, surpassing for the first time the RM1 billion mark. It recorded a major milestone for the year ending September 2009 by posting its highest ever operating profit of RM90.5 million, representing a 69 per cent growth from the previous year.

A large part of the company’s successful run is due to its continued emphasis on a culture of "Execution with a Difference" that focused on a seamless link of three core elements - people, strategy and processes.

F&N’s dairies division has a vision of being Malaysia’s leading dairy and food marketer with world-class products, standards and capabilities forming part and parcel of its offerings. The many brands under the umbrella of F&N Dairies - F&N Sweetened Condensed Milk, the Magnolia, Daisy and Farmhouse brands of pasteurised milk, the Fruit Tree Fresh and Sunkist pasteurised juices, as well as Magnolia ice cream – are the embodiment of this vision as well as the F&N Group’s values of innovation, family values and integrity.

A BRIEF OVERVIEW OF
F&N DAIRIES (THAILAND) LTD

F&N Dairies (Thailand) Limited (FNDT) began operations on February 1, 2007. It is a market leader in the sterilised milk segment (under Bear Brand) and evaporated milk (Carnation Brand) in Thailand. It holds a leading position in the malt drinks (Milo UHT) and condensed milk (Carnation).

The success of FNDT is driven by the Group’s acquisition of Nestle’s canned milk business in Thailand in 2007 which allowed the group instant entry to the large Thailand and burgeoning markets of Indo-China. This effectively gives FNDT access to a large base of over 220 million people (total population of Thailand, Vietnam, Cambodia and Laos). Its products already have significant presence in Cambodia and Laos whilst plans are underway for entry into Vietnam, a high potential market with a population of about 80 million people.

Following the acquisition, an additional RM 1 billion has been added to the FN Group revenue. Almost overnight, this move has helped transform F&N into one of the top five non-alcoholic food and beverage companies in Thailand. Today, FNDT operates two dairy plants near Bangkok. Its canned liquid milk production lines have since been relocated from Navanakorn to a new condensery situated on a 23-acre site in RojanaIndustrial Park, Ayutthaya.

2009 marked the opening of this RM250 million “best-in-class” dairy plant at Rojana on September 9, 2009. The greenfield liquid milk plant is poised to play a major role as an efficient and low-cost producer to help realise the Group’s long-term investment objectives and commitment in Thailand and the Indochina region.

The success of the company is based on the significant strengths of its current products, brands and people, and the introduction of new products into existing and new product categories. This includes introduction of new products (ambient and chilled) under the F&N banner. Continued focused and significant investments have been directed toward high impact and effective advertising and promotions, where consumer relevance and connection to our great brands are of paramount importance. A case in point is the recent success in revitalizing BB Gold, a premium malt based dairy product, where new advertising and effective packaging display resulted in monthly volumes growing by more than two and a half times post campaign.

Revenue for FNDT for the year ending September 2009 was RM813 million with domestic and
Indochina sales accounting for 82 per cent of the total. Exports to Malaysian operations and third parties made up the rest. Operating profit surged 43 per cent to RM50 million, reflecting the division’s resilience amidst challenging market conditions.

The company continues to benefit from cost-saving initiatives started last year and new ones implemented in the current year to help overcome cost push inflationary pressures, as well as to enable the business to be more productive and efficient in supplying products to its customers.

FNDT currently carries a number of brands including Bear Brand, Carnation and Tea Pot in the Sweetened Condensed Milk and Evaporated Milk category, Bear Brand in Sterilised Milk category; Bear Brand and Milo in the UHT Milk & Beverage category, and FN Magnolia and Fruit Tree Fresh in the Pasteurised category.

To further enhance the company’s position as the leader in the food and beverage sector, FNDT will continue to embark on strategic initiatives to stimulate innovation, enhance product quality, increase efficiencies in the production process, fasten speed-to-market deliveries and achieve higher customer service levels. A team with great passion, dedication and commitment will help achieve continued success for FNDT.
