F&N’s glass containers division pursued a strategy of product, quality and design innovation to remain dominant in the domestic market and in new markets. The division also adopted a unified branding approach under the F&N corporate banner which enabled the many disparate entities in different countries to present a common international identity.

GLASS PRODUCTS SDN BHD
With a history of over four decades, Malaya Glass Products (MGP) is one of the leading producers of glass packaging containers in this part of the region. Listed on the then Kuala Lumpur Stock Exchange at one time, it is now a fully owned subsidiary of F&N Holdings Berhad.
In the early 1990s, after fulfilling the domestic market, Malaya Glass Products expanded its production capacity, first to Vietnam in 1995, later acquiring Kuala Lumpur Glass Manufacturers Company Sdn Bhd in 2000 and then further expanded its overseas production capacity by setting up a new plant in China in 2003 and later making its presence in Thailand in 2007. We now have a plant in Vietnam, named Malaya-Vietnam Glass Ltd.; in China, Sichuan Malaya Glass Ltd.; and in Thailand, Thai Malaya Glass Ltd.
For the year ended September 2009, the operating profit of the glass division improved by 15% to RM41 million (before unusual items of RM31.5 million arising from the closure of Kuala Lumpur Glass Manufacturers) on the back of revenue of RM466 million.
The division’s growth was contributed by the implementation of better pricing and product mix. Other contributing factors were the implementation of cost reduction initiatives such as developing lower cost alternative sourcing and controls on working capital and capital expenditure. Operational efficiency and innovation which included the sharing of best practices among glassworks and technology partners, technical advancements and enhanced quality standards were complementary contributing factors.
