Today, having a degree alone is not indicative of a well-rounded graduate. The graduate job market is increasingly crowded and challenging for thousands of university leavers each year as employers look beyond academics when selecting job candidates.
Acknowledging the importance of a well-rounded education, Fraser & Neave Holdings Bhd (F&NHB) recently recognised 180 young achievers at the recent F&N Chairman’s Award.
The students, children of employees of the F&N Group, shared a total of RM367,000 under the award scheme.
The annual award, the 14th to date, was initiated to celebrate the Group’s 120th anniversary celebrations in 2003. To date, F&NHB has disbursed cash awards more than RM3 million to 2,295 children.
Speaking at the award ceremony, F&NHB Chief Executive Officer, Mr Lim Yew Hoe said that beyond achieving academic excellence, students need to grow into confident, dynamic individuals ready to face the evolving challenges at work and their respective life journeys.
“While academic success is highly sought after, it alone isn't enough to succeed in the modern world. Building character and life skills are also an essential part to a well-rounded education and success in the workplace. Hence, getting involved in extra-curricular activities is equally important for students,” he added.
At the ceremony, F&NHB rewarded seven Special Award recipients who have excelled in both academics and co-curricular activities. Among them was 13-year- old Jared Ong Kai Ze for scoring 7As in his UPSR examination and winning the third placing in the state Volleyball competition.
Besides Jared, 16-year-old Nurul Husnina Amani Binti Abdul Halim also received the coveted award, in recognition of her outstanding achievement in the PT3 exam and participation in the national-level KUSES chess championship.
“Finding a balance between academics and extra-curricular activities is key for students although it can be challenging with the mounting homework and tuition classes they are expected to attend. Parents, as strong motivators, play an important role in guiding their children to realise their full potential. Hence, this award is also a tremendous endorsement of your efforts and aspiration for your child,” said Mr Lim as he congratulated the parents.
Every year, young achievers and their families are invited to the F&N Chairman’s Award presentation ceremony during which F&NHB Chairman Y.A.M. Tengku Syed Badarudin Jamalullail presents each of them with cash awards of between RM300 to RM5,000.
The award ceremony saw the Company reward 43 recipients in the UPSR category, 30 in the PT3 category, 37 in the SPM category. Sixty-three recipients received awards in the Tertiary Education category for successfully gaining admission to a local or overseas university while seven received Special Awards.
