F&N School Recycling Campaign 2019 In Kuching Collects More Than 10 Times The Amount Of Recyclables Amassed In Inaugural Initiative
The Fraser & Neave Holdings Bhd (F&NHB) School Recycling Campaign in Kuching and Kota Samarahan 2019 has collected 219,082.12kg of recyclables, more than 10 times the amount collected in the first ever initiative in Sarawak in 2017.
Held from March 1 to August 30, 2019, the six-month campaign attracted 50,000 students from 57 primary and secondary schools, under the jurisdiction of the Kuching North City Hall (DBKU), the Council of the City of Kuching South (MBKS), the Kota Samarahan Municipal Council (MPKS) and the Padawan Municipal Council (MPP).
This year’s campaign marked the beginning of F&NHB’s collaboration with the Ministry of Local Government & Housing Sarawak (MLGH) and the Natural Resources and Environment Board Sarawak (NREB) in promoting recycling efforts in the state based on the 3R philosophy of Reduce, Reuse and Recycle.
F&NHB’s school recycling campaign first ventured into Sarawak in 2017 when it partnered with DBKU to organise its debut programme which saw 21 primary and secondary schools accumulating 20,291.2kg of recyclable items.
Speaking at the prize presentation ceremony of the F&N School Recycling Campaign in Kuching and Kota Samarahan 2019, Cariessa Goh, Corporate Affairs Manager of F&NHB, commended the effort and commitment of every party involved which resulted in the increased number of participating schools and students that worked hard towards making the campaign a success.
“As a socially and environmentally responsible corporate body, F&NHB is committed to preserving our natural surroundings and educating the community particularly school students on how they can play an active role in creating a healthier and more sustainable future for the next generation.
“The overwhelming support and dedication shown by everyone in this year’s campaign signify their unified effort in contributing to the conservation of the environment and the preservation of its natural resources. It proved that every contribution, big or small can make a huge impact on the environment. We sincerely hope that the students have acquired key takeaways from the campaign, and will utilise the knowledge and experience gained to act responsibly in ensuring a sustainable future for all,” Goh added.
During the F&N School Recycling Campaign in Kuching and Kota Samarahan 2019, 28 primary and 29 secondary schools challenged each other to collect the highest amount of recyclables per student such as aluminium, plastics, paper, beverage cartons and e-waste to win cash prizes worth RM20,200.
MBKS led the pack in the overall category after collecting 117,686.88kg of recyclables while second place went to DBKU with a total collection of 68,080.69kg of recyclable items. MPP finished in third position overall with a total collection of 21,633.55kg of recyclables while MPKS ended up in fourth place in the campaign after accumulating 11,681.00kg of recyclable materials.

Sekolah Jenis Kebangsaan (Cina) Chung Hua No.3 under MBKS was crowned the champion of the primary school category after accumulating 27.33kg of recyclables per student and won RM1,400 in cash prize. Sekolah Jenis Kebangsaan (Cina) Chung Hua Pangkalan Baru under MPP took second place with 25.79kg of recyclable items per student and went home with RM1,300. Meanwhile, Sekolah Jenis Kebangsaan Chung Hua No 1 under DBKU took the third spot after collecting 20.93kg of recyclables per student, winning RM1,200.Chung Hua Middle School No. 1 under MBKS topped the secondary school category and took home a cash prize of RM1,400 after amassing 32.57kg of recyclables per student. Sekolah Menengah Kebangsaan Tun Ahmad Zaidi under DBKU won second place with a total collection of 7.87kg of recyclable materials per student, walking away with RM1,300. Sekolah Menengah Kebangsaan Pesantren Abdul Taib Mahmud under MPKS was close behind in third place with 7.79kg of recyclables and won RM1,200.
Additionally, four special awards were rewarded to the schools for the most aluminium, plastics, beverage cartons and e-waste accumulated.
Sekolah Jenis Kebangsaan (Cina) Chung Hua No.3 under MBKS won the special award for the highest collection of aluminium in the primary school category and won RM700 after accumulating 731.5kg of aluminium materials. Meanwhile, Chung Hua Middle School No. 1 under MBKS reigned victorious in the secondary school category after collecting 1,130.0kg of aluminium and took home RM700 in cash prize.
Sekolah Jenis Kebangsaan (Cina) Chung Hua No.3 under MBKS won the special award for the largest amount of plastic materials collected in the primary school category and brought home RM700 for its collection of 17,367.0kg of plastics. Sekolah Menengah Kebangsaan St Thomas under DBKU topped the secondary school category for its total collection of 897.0kg of plastic materials, winning RM700.
Sekolah Jenis Kebangsaan (Cina) Chung Hua No.5 of MBKS scored a double triumph as it picked up two special awards for the highest amount of beverage cartons and e-waste collected, after amassing 139.0kg of beverage cartons and 2,370.0kg of e-waste, and won RM700 and RM500 for the respective categories.

Sekolah Menengah Kebangsaan Tun Ahmad Zaidi under DBKU won the special award for the largest amount of beverage cartons collected in the secondary school category after amassing 131.7kg of materials, winning RM700. Meanwhile, Sekolah Menengah Kebangsaan Saint Joseph under DBKU walked away with the special award for the largest collection of e-waste in the secondary school category after accumulating 1,367.6kg of materials, winning RM500 in cash prize.
