F&N’S Inaugural School Recycling Campaign in Perlis A Big Success
Held from January 1 to July 31, 2018, Kempen Kitar Semula Peringkat Negeri Perlis 2018 was aimed at educating and generating awareness of the importance of applying the 5R philosophy of Reduce, Reuse, Recycle, Rethink and Reinvent in conserving the environment and reducing landfill waste.
The campaign was co-organised by Fraser & Neave Holdings Bhd (F&NHB), the Solid Waste Management and Public Cleansing Corporation (SWCorp) in Perlis and the Perlis Education Department. The seven-month school recycling campaign was supported by the Department of National Unity and Integration in Perlis.
Sixteen pre-schools, 28 primary schools and 14 secondary schools across Perlis participated in the campaign as they vied for RM22,860 in prize money by competing to accumulate the largest haul of recyclables materials including paper, plastic, aluminium, beverage cartons and e-waste, per student.
Speaking at the campaign’s closing and prize presentation ceremony, F&NHB Chairman Y.A.M. Tengku Syed Badarudin Jamalullail said that children are the best hope for nature conservation and emphasised the importance of instilling good recycling habits in the young to ensure that they will keep these habits into adulthood, and help shape a more sustainable future for generations to come.
“Kempen Kitar Semula Peringkat Negeri Perlis 2018 not only spurred primary and secondary school students to practise recycling habits based on the 5R philosophy but also encouraged pre-schoolers to learn about recycling from an early age. We are confident that the campaign has helped empower these students to understand that they have the potential to change the world to be better, regardless of their age.
“F&N’s collaboration with SWCorp Perlis and the Perlis Education Department this year not only aimed at increasing the students’ motivation but also rewarding them so that they continue to practise recycling as part of their daily routine. I would like to express my sincere appreciation to the students, principals and teachers for making this first ever recycling campaign together with F&N in Perlis a big success. I hope this campaign will turn these students into passionate environmental heroes who are committed to preserving the environment,” Y.A.M. Tengku Syed Badarudin added.
