Kempen Kitar Semula F&N & MBSA Hits A New Record With 175,161.72KG Collection Of Recyclables
Co-organised by Fraser & Neave Holdings Bhd (F&NHB) and the Shah Alam City Council or Majlis Bandaraya Shah Alam (MBSA), the annual school recycling campaign was held from February 1 to October 31, 2018, and offered RM29,500.
The nine-month campaign was supported by the Selangor State Education Department, Selangor State Environmental Department and Tetra Pak Malaysia, and aimed at inculcating the recycling culture among the young.
Kempen Kitar Semula F&N & MBSA 2018 also inspired students to explore fun and creative ways to create day-to-day and decorative items out of recyclable waste, based on the 5R philosophy of Reduce, Reuse, Recycle, Rethink and Reinvent.
Speaking at the prize giving ceremony, Cariessa Goh, Corporate Affairs Manager, F&NHB said that the amount of recyclable items collected in Kempen Kitar Semula F&N & MBSA has grown each year since its inception in 2007, which exemplified increasing recycling efforts by the students.
“This year marks the 12th edition of Kempen Kitar Semula F&N & MBSA and we are proud that the students have achieved a remarkable milestone of collecting the biggest amount of recyclables in the campaign’s history after amassing a whopping total collection of 175,161.72kg which equates to a 21.7 per cent increase from last year’s amount of 143,946.20kg.
“The campaign gained an even better feat as it managed to collect a large volume of recyclables despite the reduced number of participants with 38 schools this year compared to 43 schools in 2017. It shows that every little thing matters and that the young can create a significant impact on the environment,” said Goh. Goh added that schools are the perfect place to foster good recycling habits among the young and develop a future generation that loves and values the environment because education plays an important role in raising student awareness on environmental issues, and forming positive perceptions and attitudes that can bring about change.
“For the past 12 years, we have witnessed the substantial impact of the campaign as students have become more active in participating in their schools’ recycling initiatives and instilling these practices at home as well as the community around them. Hence, we would like to congratulate the students, principals, teachers and schools for their support and commitment in making this year’s campaign a success,” she added.
Pra SK Seksyen 19 topped the pre-school category with 21.46kg of recyclables per student to win a cash prize of RM500 while Pra SK TTDI Jaya maintained its second position after collecting 17.87kg of recyclable items to bring home RM400. Last year’s champion, Tadika Seri Kurnia settled for third spot after accumulating 9.20kg of recyclables per student and won a cash prize of RM300.
Second time’s a charm for Pra SK Seksyen 19 after taking sixth place in last year’s campaign. A teacher from Pra SK Seksyen 19, Cik Ku Noorul Amin Binti Hj. Tuan Mat expressed her gratitude to everyone who contributed to the school’s success, “I would like to thank the parents for helping us out and giving their full support to encourage their children to practise good recycling habits at home. The parents’ strong backing has definitely helped us strengthened our recycling effort which resulted in the win. As teachers and parents, we need to set good examples for the young so that they will continue to carry good recycling habits into their adult years,” she added.
SK Alam Megah (3) maintained its winning streak after leading the primary school category with 9.70kg of recyclables per student and took home RM2,000. SK Bukit Naga secured second spot with 7.69kg of recyclable items, winning a cash prize of RM1,700 while SJK (T) Hicom won third place after collecting 6.06kg of recyclables to bring home RM1,500.
Cik Jannati Binti Saffin, who is the teacher in charge of SK Alam Megah (3)’s recycling club could not believe that the school won the primary school category for the fourth consecutive year. “It was definitely a shock for us. We didn’t expect to win for the fourth time in a row. Recycling is hard at first but once you start, it does not feel like a hassle anymore. It will later become second nature to us. Since we throw away rubbish every day, why not make the extra effort to separate the recyclables to make the world a better place. Our success in this campaign has truly set the bar for us to perform better next year,” said Cik Jannati.
In the secondary school category, SMK TTDI Jaya clinched the top spot with 8.74kg of recyclables per student and won RM2,000 in cash prize. We will continue to inspire the students to keep the environment clean and instill a sense of responsibility in them so that they will better understand the negative effect of improper waste disposal,“ Puan Wardah added.
