F&N’S Recycling Initiative Grows Stronger
7 September 2016 – Buoyed by the success of its recycling campaign in the Penang Island, Fraser & Neave Holdings Bhd (F&NHB) is eager to expand the green movement throughout Malaysia.
“Many might argue that children are too young to understand environmental issues. However, our campaign proves that even the young can gain an appreciation for nature and what it takes to protect it. It further affirms that instilling green values should begin at an early age.
We are actively seeking out opportunities to expand our school-level recycling campaign and are in talks with several other municipal councils to seek their support,” said Ms Cariessa Goh, Corporate Affairs Manager, F&NHB at the closing ceremony of the Kempen Kitar Semula organised by the Company and Majlis Bandaraya Pulau Pinang (MBPP).
The annual competition aims to promote environment preservation among students and imbue a recycling culture, following the 5R philosophy of Reduce, Reuse, Recycle, Rethink and Reinvent.
In its fifth year, the state wide Kempen Kitar Semula F&N & MBPP 2016 marked its most successful campaign yet, drawing a total of 90 schools and a record collection of recyclables amounting to 127,193.71kg.
The four-month campaign which ended on August 12, 2016, required schools to collect the largest haul of items such as aluminum cans, plastic bottles, paper, e-waste and Tetra Pak materials. Four special awards were also up for grabs for schools with the highest accumulated aluminum, plastic, e-waste and Tetra Pak materials collected.
Organised hand-in-hand with the Penang Education Department and Tetra Pak (Malaysia) Sdn. Bhd., the school-level campaign saw the participation of 18 pre-schools, 41 primary schools and 31 secondary schools. Cash prizes worth a total of RM23,260 were awarded to winning schools with the highest recyclable materials collected per head in each school.
Collecting above their weight, students from SK Hutching took the lead in the pre-school category, collecting a whopping 54.00kg of recyclable items per student. Last year’s champion, SK Batu Feringgi clinched the runner-up spot while SK Sungai Rusa claimed the third position with 46.12kg and 28.86kg of recyclable items collected respectively.
In the primary school category, SJK (C) Eng Chuan took over the reign in this year’s competition from former champions, SJK (C) Sum Min who bagged the runner-up spot. The new champion recorded an impressive 63.24kg of recyclable items per student while the runner-up was not too far behind with 61.78kg. Meanwhile, SJK (C) Yu Chye came in third with a collection of 49.03kg per student.
In the secondary school category, SMK Padang Polo snatched the crown for the third consecutive year, registering a total of 20.93kg of recyclables per student while SMK Jelutong and SMJK Sacred Heart claimed the second and third places respectively.
“We are extremely proud of the students and thrilled of the campaign’s success. This is our fifth year in Penang and since we began in 2012, the campaign’s impact on school-goers has increased tremendously. With the support of MBPP and our partners from the Penang Education Department and Tetra Pak (Malaysia) Sdn. Bhd., we hope to continue this initiative for many more years,” said Ms Cariessa.
The competition is organised concurrently with the Kempen Kitar Semula F&N & MBSA in Shah Alam, Selangor which enters its tenth year and will culminate later this month.
Yang Berbahagia Dato’ Ir. Ang Aing Thye, City Council Secretary, MBPP was present at the closing ceremony to hand out the prizes to representatives from winning schools, alongside Ms. Cariessa Goh and Tetra Pak (Malaysia) Sdn. Bhd., Key Account Manager, Ms. Sudarat Prachaseree.
